The vibe
Hill country miles, nobody left behind
Bike Austin’s volunteer-led no-drop rides cover a lot of ground — literally and figuratively. Multiple rides run throughout the week, reaching into the Hill Country roads that Austin cyclists have been debating and arguing over for decades. Each ride is rated by two variables: a letter for pace (how fast the group moves) and a number for terrain (1 being flat, 4 being very hilly), which makes it straightforward to find a ride that matches where you actually are right now rather than where you wish you were.
The staging areas vary by ride, so checking rides.bikeaustin.org before you head out is essential — routes and meeting spots are posted there week by week. Helmets are mandatory. Volunteer ride leaders keep the group together and manage the pace so the no-drop commitment is real rather than aspirational. This is particularly useful on longer Hill Country routes where getting dropped on an unfamiliar road would be genuinely inconvenient.
The range of rides here means you can find your footing as a newer group rider and gradually work your way through the rating system as your fitness improves. There’s no cost, no membership gatekeeping — just show up at the right place at the right time with a helmet and a bike in good working order.
