Heron Lakes is one of the stranger, more fun stops on the long-running Cross Crusade calendar — a municipal golf course in North Portland turned into a proper cyclocross battleground for one fall weekend. Fairways become straightaways, sand traps become obstacles, and the mud does what Portland mud always does in October.
This is classic Pacific Northwest cyclocross: big fields across every category, a genuinely social scene along the course, and conditions that can shift from dusty to swamp depending on the week’s rain. Cross Crusade regulars know to bring a pit bike or at least a spare set of wheels.
