Dirty miles around Chatfield
If you’re looking for a proper gravel loop near Denver that doesn’t require loading up a car for a long drive, DBTC’s Dirty Chatfield ride is the answer. Twenty-nine miles, 80% unpaved, all within the southwest metro — starting from Waterton Canyon and threading together the paths around Chatfield Reservoir, the Highline Canal, and back up Waterton Canyon to the dam.
A gravel or ATB bike is required here — this isn’t a paved trail cruise. The terrain is manageable rather than punishing, making it accessible to gravel newcomers while still delivering genuine dirt miles for more experienced riders. Bring a hydration pack, snacks, and the ability to deal with a flat without calling for a support vehicle.
The ride is capped at 8 riders, so it stays small and moves efficiently. Register through DBTC’s site to hold your spot — these limited-capacity rides fill up. The payoff is a genuinely scenic route through one of the metro’s best open-space areas without fighting Chatfield State Park parking on a weekend.
