The vibe

Weird bikes, weirder people

The Dead Baby Bike Club has been part of Portland’s cycling counterculture for decades, and their monthly ride is exactly what the name suggests: a night ride for people who take their bikes seriously in all the ways that don’t involve going fast. Freak bikes are encouraged — tall bikes, chopper bikes, mutant creations welded together from parts no one else wanted. Show up on a normal bike and you’ll still be welcome, but you might feel a little underdressed.

The route runs under 9 miles with a refreshment stop in the middle. The pace is whatever keeps the group together. Gatherings start around 7:30 PM with the ride departing at 9:00 PM, which means there’s time to admire the assembled machinery before anyone has to pedal anywhere.

First Saturday of every month. Location varies — check the Shift2Bikes calendar for the current meeting point. Free, though bringing something to share at the refreshment stop is in the spirit of the thing.
