The vibe

Steep, rugged, no apologies

Nederland sits 17 miles west of Boulder at 8,236 feet, and the gravel that rolls out from this mountain town plays by mountain rules. Ned Gravel on July 11 pushes riders into the backcountry of Boulder County on terrain the organizers describe as steep, rugged, and technical — the kind of course that exposes anyone who packed road-gravel assumptions along with their kit.

This isn’t a place for 38mm tires and a casual spin in the hills. You’ll want volume, you’ll want a pack, and you’ll want legs that can handle extended climbs with no recovery between them. The altitude bites, especially for riders who don’t live above 5,000 feet. That said, the Front Range location makes Ned Gravel one of the most accessible serious gravel events in Colorado — Denver to start line in under an hour.

Nederland itself colors the whole experience: the quirky high-altitude town famous for Frozen Dead Guy Days has a low-key, outsider vibe that carries into the event. Post-ride, Salto Coffee and the local bar scene on Nederland’s small main strip give you somewhere to sit and reconsider your fitness choices before the drive home.
