The vibe

Big gravel, greener Steamboat

SBT GRVL made the biggest calendar move in Colorado endurance cycling this year: out of August and into June 26–28. That’s not a small shift — June Steamboat means lush meadows instead of dry August brown, potentially higher creek crossings, and a completely different training build than the traditional late-summer peak that Colorado athletes have built their seasons around for years.

The practical consequence is that the legendary “Leadboat” double — running SBT GRVL and the Leadville Trail 100 in back-to-back weeks — is effectively gone. You can actually commit to one race now. Routes run from 28 to 146 miles across the rolling ranch country north of town, mixing open gravel valleys with just enough climbing to remind you that you’re at altitude.

The field here runs the full spectrum: competitive riders chasing the long course, first-timers building toward the 50-mile, and a solid contingent who show up mostly for the post-ride scene on Steamboat’s main street. The Yampa Valley Brewing Co. and the full summer festival energy make the after-party as much of a draw as the riding itself.
