The vibe

Streets belong to people today

Sunday Parkways does something simple and powerful: it closes Portland streets to cars and hands them to people. The East Portland edition on June 28 runs from 11 AM to 4 PM, opening a 4-mile car-free route through Outer SE neighborhoods — from Ventura Park through Lincoln, Parklane, and out to Verdell Burdine Rutherford Park. Vendor marketplaces, activities, and the rare experience of riding streets normally dominated by traffic.

This is quintessential family cycling infrastructure: flat, safe, and genuinely fun. Kids on training wheels, cargo bikes, regular commuters, and absolute beginners all share the same pavement without the usual anxiety. It’s a great introduction to group cycling for people who haven’t found a way in yet, and a reliable yearly gathering for the East Portland community.

Free and open to all. Bring the whole household, whatever bikes are available, and a willingness to be reminded what streets can feel like when they’re designed for the people who live on them.
