The vibe

National championship, mountain roads

Frederick, Maryland isn’t the first city that comes to mind when you think gran fondo, but the roads around it make a serious case. The Gran route covers 87 miles through Catoctin Mountain National Park, state forests, and municipal park roads — with 8,500 feet of climbing packed in at one of the highest elevation-per-mile ratios in the entire Gran Fondo National Series. Early September in western Maryland means cool morning air and peak foliage starting to come in on the ridges.

This event also serves as the 2026 USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championships. Championship riders go off at 8:00 AM on the 87-mile course; general Gran Fondo participants start at 8:30 AM. Either way, the format is timed-segment racing — five timed sections on the Gran route determine your placement, not your overall finish time. That structure keeps it competitive without turning into a full road race. There’s also a 60-mile Medio and a 30-mile Piccolo for riders who want the experience without the championship mileage.

The finish lands you back in historic downtown Frederick, which is an excellent place to be after a hard day in the mountains. The DC and Baltimore cycling communities are both within reach here, and the event draws a strong regional field. If you want to know how you stack up nationally on a road gran fondo, this is the one to enter.
