The vibe

Fast packs through the hills

Every Tuesday evening through late September, Grizzly Peak Cyclists assembles at the corner of Spruce and Grizzly Peak Blvd in Berkeley for one of the East Bay’s more serious group rides. The group rolls at 5:35 PM sharp — meet at 5:25 to be ready — and heads into the Berkeley and Oakland Hills via a route that hits Skyline (with a regroup at Sibley), Redwood Road, and Pinehurst before returning. Six regroups in total, which keeps the group together without sacrificing the intensity that makes this ride worth showing up for.

Pack riding skills are required and not optional. This is a brisk group where close-quarters handling is expected, not negotiated. No e-bikes, no flashing lights — both of which are standard courtesies on rides at this pace. Rain cancels, and poor air quality index days cancel, both of which are reasonable accommodations given you’re trying to breathe hard in the hills.

Grizzly Peak Cyclists has been organizing Berkeley Hills rides long enough to have a tight-knit community of regulars. Show up knowing how to ride in a pack, and Tuesday evenings will become a fixture in your weekly calendar.
