By the time October rolls around, most of Colorado’s gravel calendar has moved indoors or shut down for the season — Grassroots Gravel is one of the last chances to race outside before winter takes over. The terrain around Pueblo is distinct from the high-alpine gravel further north: mesa country, with its own texture and sightlines.
Spread across two days, the race gives riders a chance to settle into a rhythm rather than empty the tank in one shot. The lower elevation compared to mountain gravel races also means warmer temperatures, which is exactly the appeal for riders looking to extend their season a little longer.
If you’ve spent the summer racing above 8,000 feet, Grassroots Gravel is a good excuse to come back down and enjoy gravel that doesn’t punish you for the altitude too.
