The vibe

Blue Ridge fall, South Carolina soul

For 15 years the Gran Fondo Hincapie has been making cyclists rethink what they know about the American Southeast. Starting from Hotel Domestique — the boutique cycling hotel George Hincapie built at the base of the Blue Ridge — the flagship Gran route covers 80 miles with 8,100 feet of climbing through South Carolina fall colors. The notorious Skyuka Mountain King of the Mountain segment and the technical switchbacks through Green River Cove are the landmarks, but the whole day has the kind of scenery and road quality that you’d expect to fly to Europe for. The Grandito (67 miles), Medio (60 miles), and Piccolo (15 miles) options bring in riders of every level.

This is a multi-day event, not just a ride. October 16–17 means a full weekend: live music, a family festival with free food and drinks, and the kind of post-ride atmosphere that only happens when 15 years of repeat attendees show up knowing exactly what they’re getting. Hincapie’s professional background is visible everywhere — the course markings, the aid stations, the production value — but what actually makes it feel special is that it’s held in a region that genuinely loves cycling. The Travelers Rest and Greenville cycling community is one of the strongest in the South.

The 15th anniversary edition is as good a reason as any to finally make the trip if you’ve been putting it off. Greenville’s downtown is walkable, excellent for eating, and 20 miles from the start line — book a room in town and treat the whole weekend as a cycling trip, not just an event.
