The vibe

Pain and glory in the hills

The name is not a joke. House of Pain (HOP) has been Danville’s Saturday morning crucible for years — a 45-mile route through the scenic and demanding East Bay hillsides that draws local pros alongside club riders and ambitious weekend warriors. Two groups, A and B, depart Peet’s Coffee at 9 AM and proceed to make the hills feel appropriately unforgiving.

Pack riding skills are not optional here. The A group particularly requires bike handling competence and the willingness to suffer at pace. The B group is marginally more forgiving but still expects you to work. What both groups share: the satisfaction of finishing 45 miles of genuinely beautiful East Bay terrain and the knowledge that the pain was earned.

The Facebook community (facebook.com/groups/291586665032871) handles coordination and any weather-related decisions. This is a self-organized ride with a long history and an established culture — show up ready to ride hard, and the HOP community will take care of the rest.
