The vibe

Wine country roads done right

Founded by pro cycling legend Levi Leipheimer in 2010, Levi’s GranFondo has earned its reputation as one of the premier gran fondos in the United States. The 100-mile route winds through Sonoma County’s wine country on a mix of closed and low-traffic roads — the kind of riding that reminds you why California has always attracted cyclists. Rolling vineyards, redwood corridors, the Russian River Valley, and coastal ridgelines make for relentlessly beautiful scenery from start to finish.

The full century gains 8,000 feet of elevation — enough to make the hills a legitimate challenge while still being accessible to well-prepared recreational riders. Shorter distance options (65 and 35 miles) make the event accessible to a broader range of fitness levels. The start and finish in downtown Santa Rosa means good restaurant access for pre and post-ride dining, and the Sonoma wine region takes full advantage of its setting — the post-ride festival includes local wine and food.

October in Sonoma is ideal cycling weather: mild temperatures, post-harvest vineyards turning gold, and minimal fog. A portion of proceeds benefits local cycling causes and youth programs. Register in spring — the full century regularly sells out months in advance.
