The vibe
Steady miles, a few hot spots
The Tuesday and Thursday morning rides from Mellow Johnny’s are Austin’s answer to the question of how you get faster when you’re not racing: you show up twice a week at 7 AM and ride 28–32 miles at 16–18 mph average with a group that knows how to push. The pace is controlled enough to stay together for most of the route, with “hot spots” — sprint or push segments — built in where the group lights it up.
Starting from Mellow Johnny’s bike shop in downtown Austin (Lance Armstrong’s old stomping ground), the routes run through Austin’s road network before the heat makes things difficult. Morning timing is intentional — you’re done and at work before the Texas sun gets serious.
Free to join, no reservation required. Show up at Mellow Johnny’s at 7 AM on a Tuesday or Thursday with a road bike in good working order. The group is experienced but not unwelcoming to riders who can hold the pace.
