The vibe

Riding for community, riding for history

The Major Taylor Bicycling Club of Minnesota has been showing up for Minneapolis cyclists since 1999 — named after Marshall “Major” Taylor, the first Black world cycling champion, who won his title in 1899. That history isn’t background noise here; it shapes everything about why this club rides. They’ve donated 300 bikes to people who couldn’t afford them, led youth riding programs, and built a welcoming lane into cycling for communities that mainstream bike culture has often overlooked.

Rides run at a social 7–9 mph pace, which means this is genuinely accessible — no dropped wheels, no ego, just people moving through Minneapolis together. The Midtown Greenway is home base, a 5.5-mile car-free corridor that cuts through South Minneapolis and connects neighborhoods that rarely get linked in cycling guides. From there, routes spread out into the city’s park system and bike network.

All are welcome, regardless of background or experience. A helmet is required on every ride — that’s the one firm rule. For current ride dates and locations, follow their Instagram (@majortaylorminnesota) or Facebook page, where the 2026 ride calendar is announced. The club also runs monthly DJ Dance rides, which are exactly what they sound like.
