Newcomer-friendly neighborhood tour
Moving to a new city is disorienting enough without trying to figure out which streets are actually safe to bike on. The New to Portland series exists to shortcut that learning curve, and this installment takes riders through the Jade District and Montavilla on a Wednesday evening loop built entirely around low-stress streets.
At 6-8 miles, it’s short enough that nobody’s intimidated and slow enough that conversation happens naturally. Riders gather at Montavilla Plaza at 5:30 PM with wheels down at 6, and the route doubles as an informal orientation to one of Portland’s more overlooked neighborhoods.
It’s a great first ride if you just landed in Portland and haven’t found your crew yet — family-friendly, no drop, and no assumptions about what gear you’re supposed to have.
