Trinidad doesn’t get the attention Salida or Steamboat do, and that’s part of the appeal of Pony Xpress Gravel 160. The race reworked its format into two 50-mile loops out of town, which means riders can bail after one lap for the 50-mile option or grind out both for the full 100 — same start line, same rolling southern Colorado ranchland, different levels of suffering.
The terrain here is classic southeastern Colorado: open range, long sightlines, and roads that stay dry and fast most of May. It’s a good pick for riders who want distance without the altitude penalty of the high-country races further north and west.
Trinidad’s downtown has a handful of solid post-race options, and the drive down from Denver or Colorado Springs is scenic enough to make the trip worth it on its own.
