Midnight Mystery Ride
Portland's monthly late-night Alt ride: meet at a secret location, depart at midnight to a destination only the leader knows. Running since 2002.
The vibe
Midnight, destination unknown
You don’t know where you’re going. That’s the whole point. On the second Friday of every month, Portland cyclists gather at a secret location at 11pm — the address shared only on the day of the ride — and at the stroke of midnight, the group rolls out to a destination known only to the ride leader. It’s been this way since 2002, and it still works.
The crowd skews toward people who own lights and aren’t precious about sleep. That said, Team Midnight keeps things genuinely accessible: the pace is social, the vibe is more urban exploration than race, and showing up for your first ride is as simple as tracking down the start location on the Shift calendar or mailing list that day. Part of the fun is the logistical puzzle of figuring out where to meet before you go somewhere you can’t predict.
If you want to go deeper, Team Midnight welcomes new ride leaders — but they ask you attend a few first to get a feel for what makes a good Midnight Mystery.
