The vibe

Midweek climbing therapy

The name says everything you need to know. The West Hills Roller Coaster is the Portland Bicycling Club’s Wednesday climbing ride — punchy rollers, real descents, and enough vertical to remind your legs what they’re for. It rolls at 11:30am, which makes it a great option if you work flexible hours or need a solid midweek training stimulus outside rush hour.

The West Hills are Portland’s backyard climbing terrain: forested roads, quick transitions between climbing and descending, and views of the city and Mount Hood when the clouds cooperate. The routes vary but consistently deliver the kind of ride where you arrive at the top of a climb and immediately wonder which hill is next. It’s rated for riders who are comfortable with large hills and want to actually work on a Wednesday.
