RMCC Palmer Divide Gravel Getaway
125km gravel populaire along the Palmer Divide south of Denver — 78% unpaved through open Colorado landscapes near Greenland Open Space. RUSA sanctioned.
The vibe
Mostly dirt, all rolling hills
The Palmer Divide sits between the South Platte and Arkansas River drainages — high open terrain that catches the wind from every direction and delivers some of the most compelling unpaved riding south of Denver. RMCC’s Gravel Getaway covers 125km out here, with 78% of the route on gravel or dirt. It’s a randonneuring populaire, so there are controls to check in at and a time limit to respect, but the atmosphere is far removed from racing.
Starting from Greenland Open Space Trailhead, the route rolls through the quiet agricultural landscape between Castle Rock and Pueblo — open meadows, ranch roads, and long sight lines that make it clear you’re well south of the metro. The spring timing means the roads are usually dry and the grass is green, which is about as good as this landscape gets.
Free to enter in 2026. RMCC and RUSA membership required. A gravel-capable bike is essential — 40mm+ tires recommended for the road surfaces encountered. Bring more water than you think you need; services are sparse out here. Sign in at 8:00 AM for a 9:00 AM departure. Full route details at rmccrides.com.
