The vibe

No leaders, all welcome

The original. San Francisco Critical Mass has been gathering at the foot of Market Street on the last Friday of every month since 1992 — longer than most cyclists have been riding. Nobody organizes it, nobody leads it, and that’s entirely the point. You show up, you ride, and for a few hours the streets belong to bikes.

Meet at Embarcadero Plaza at 5:30 PM when the crowd builds, and the ride rolls whenever the mass feels ready. The route is unplanned and collectively negotiated in real time — sometimes up Market, sometimes through the Mission or the Haight, always unpredictable. Turnout ranges from a few hundred on a cold January night to thousands when the energy is right. Cruisers, fixies, cargo bikes, tallbikes, recumbents — if it has wheels and you can pedal it, it belongs here.

This is the ride that put mass cycling on the map globally. Thousands of cities have their own version now, but SF’s is the original template. It’s a cultural institution as much as a bike ride — part street party, part rolling protest, part neighborhood tour. Show up with a working bike and whatever enthusiasm you’ve got.
