LUMPS — Seattle's Famous Wednesday Pie Rides
Free Wednesday midday rides from Matthews Beach along the Burke-Gilman Trail, famous for weekly stops at a pie shop. Leisurely to Steady pace, 15–50 miles.
The vibe
Pie stops mandatory, pace optional
There are rides where the destination is incidental, and then there’s LUMPS — the Leisurely Urbane Matthews-Beach Pedalers — where the pie shop stop is the whole point. Every Wednesday at 11:10 AM from Matthews Beach Park, three groups head out along the Burke-Gilman Trail with a shared understanding that pastry is waiting at the turn-around. Routes range from 15 to 50 miles depending on pace group (Leisurely, Moderate, or Steady), which means you can ride as far as your legs — or your appetite — will carry you.
The Burke-Gilman is one of Seattle’s great cycling arteries, and LUMPS uses it well. Matthews Beach is a nice staging spot with lake views, and the midday Wednesday timing means you’re not fighting commuter traffic. Bring cash for pie. Seriously.
This is a free Cascade ride and one of the more social events in their weekly calendar. Popular dates fill early — summer Wednesdays especially — so register through cascade.org when you know you’re going. First-timers should plan to chat at the pie stop; that’s where the real LUMPS culture lives.
