Bay Area Recumbent Cyclists (BARC)
Community of recumbent cycling enthusiasts on scenic Bay Area routes at 8-12 mph. All pedal-powered cycles welcome — a monthly Sunday gathering for riders who ride differently.
The vibe
Laid-back wheels, scenic Bay trails
Recumbent bikes occupy a specific niche in cycling — more aerodynamic by design, often more comfortable for long distances, and visually distinct enough that they attract attention on any group ride. The Bay Area Recumbent Cyclists bring together riders whose preference for the recumbent position turns a solo pursuit into a community. Monthly rides across the Bay Area give members routes to ride together and people to ride with.
The pace (8-12 mph on flat terrain) reflects the social rather than competitive orientation of the rides. All pedal-powered cycles are welcome — e-assisted bikes included, motor-only excluded. The variety within the group itself is part of the appeal: different recumbent configurations, tricycles, and occasionally some two-wheeled visitors riding alongside.
Monthly rides typically start at 9:45 AM on Sundays from various Bay Area locations — the Berkeley area is a common hub. Find the BARC group on Meetup at meetup.com/sfbarc for the current schedule and upcoming ride locations. The community is genuinely welcoming to people who are curious about recumbent cycling but don’t yet own one.
