The vibe

Fix a bike, change a life

Every Tuesday from 5 to 7pm, the SF Bicycle Coalition’s Market Street office fills up with volunteers, donated bikes, and the satisfying clatter of wrenches. Bike It Forward is the city’s most hands-on cycling community program — and it’s less about riding and more about what bikes make possible. Abandoned and donated bicycles get stripped down, assessed, rebuilt, and handed off to people across San Francisco who need reliable transportation.

The crowd is as mixed as the city itself: experienced mechanics who’ve been coming for years, curious beginners learning their first derailleur adjustment, and everyone in between. The Coalition runs the program in partnership with SFMTA and community organizations like the Excelsior Bike Club, SF CASA, and BMAGIC, which means completed bikes reach kids and adults all over the city through regular distribution events.

Spots fill up, so RSVP in advance — slots typically open about a month out. No mechanical experience required. You’ll leave knowing more than you came in with, and knowing that the bike you touched that night is going somewhere useful.
