The vibe

Live long and pedal

Six years and counting, Portland’s Star Trek Ride is exactly what it sounds like: cyclists in Trek costumes rolling through Portland, stopping for trivia and giveaways, taking the whole thing seriously enough to have a good time and loosely enough to stay fun. Captain’s uniforms, Klingon ridgehead makeup, red shirts, Vulcan ears — all of it is correct and appropriate attire.

The ride departs from Irving Park at 7 PM on June 4th, with Trek trivia happening before the ride kicks off. Giveaways run throughout, and the route takes in Portland neighborhoods at a social pace where everyone stays together. This is a Pedalpalooza event, which means it’s free, community-organized, and operates with the kind of cheerful enthusiasm that makes Portland’s bike culture worth being part of.

No Trek expertise required to participate, though it helps. Show up in costume, or show up without one — the important thing is showing up. Irving Park is in NE Portland near the Alberta Arts District. Check the Shift calendar at shift2bikes.org for the exact route and any updates.
