The vibe

Routt County on unpaved roads

SBT GRVL rolls out of Steamboat Springs each June and heads deep into Routt County — ranching country where the roads are gravel, the views are wide open, and the riding is legitimately hard. It’s one of the bigger names in American gravel, drawing riders from across the country who want something that feels earned. The route threads through working agricultural land and high-country terrain that doesn’t care about your fitness app.

The event has been through its share of uncertainty in recent years — land access, route negotiations, the messy reality of running a big ride through private ranch land. None of that gets smoothed over; the organizers lean into it. Their 2024 documentary on Outside Watch goes behind the scenes on all of it, which is worth a watch if you want to understand what actually goes into putting this thing on.

Registration for 2026 is already closed, which tells you something about demand. If you’re eyeing it for 2027, put it on your calendar early. Steamboat has good food and hot springs, so most people build a long weekend around it — the ride is the centerpiece, not a quick day trip.
