Helen, Georgia doesn’t look like the rest of the state — it’s a Bavarian-themed alpine village tucked into the north Georgia mountains, and it makes for a genuinely strange, genuinely great backdrop for a gran fondo. The riding matches the setting: steep, sustained climbs and quiet National Forest roads that reward riders who trained for elevation, not just distance.
Three distances (Gran at ~90 miles, Medio at ~65, Piccolo at ~25) each carry their own timed segments, and — as with every Gran Fondo National Series stop — only those segments count toward your placement. Because the roads run remote, the course comes with real support: law enforcement, safety motos, mechanics, and staffed feed stations along the way.
Roll back into Helen afterward for a village that looks nothing like the mountains you just climbed through — a fitting, slightly surreal finish line.
