EuroVelo 6 is the continent-crossing river route — 2,800 miles following the Loire, Rhine, Main, and Danube from France’s Atlantic coast to Romania’s Black Sea shore. Because it traces rivers almost exclusively, it’s one of the flattest long-distance routes in the world — dramatically different from the mountain-oriented routes of North America. You cross the entire European continent without a serious climb.
The scenery changes profoundly every few hundred miles. The Loire Valley delivers château country and one of France’s great cycling corridors. The Rhine gorge through Germany is dramatic and well-serviced. Vienna appears on the Danube like a reward after crossing Austria. Budapest is extraordinary from the river. The Danube Gorge at the Iron Gate between Serbia and Romania is one of the great natural spectacles of Europe. The route ends in Constanța, a Roman city on the Black Sea where the sense of arrival is real.
Infrastructure is excellent throughout. The Danube Cycle Path from Passau, Austria to Vienna is one of the world’s most developed dedicated cycling corridors — hotels, bike shops, and ferries at 20-mile intervals. Eastern Europe is rougher but equally rewarding and significantly cheaper. Ride west-to-east to follow the river currents and the prevailing winds.
